Carlowrie castle // Edinburgh
wALLED gARDEN Design
A prestigious venue located on the outskirts of Edinburgh, Carlowrie Castle commissioned Stephen Ogilvie to rejuvenate their extensive walled garden. We transformed an expanse of lawn into a visually inspiring garden with the capacity to host large scale events.
Gravel paths create structural axes. Circular ‘rest areas’ enclosed by planting deliver punctuation to the landscape and provide space from which to enjoy views towards the house and surrounding woodlands. Clipped hedging, Taxus solitaires and block-form Carpinus are offset by loose contemporary herbaceous plantings.
The restoration of two existing fountains and the addition of two new water features creates a strong sense of movement in the grounds.
